What do you think of this set up?

Have a look at this young stock set-up. We see:

  • contact between babies
  • there in the middle of the barn
  • a seperator for warm air
  • A jacket

Just wondering ....when the calves are in doubles instead of single do they suckle each other? how do you tell which needs a jacket and which doesnt?

Double: give unlimited milk till 30-40!days.
Less cross suckling!

Jacket: below 10 degrees celcius? Depends on the housing. No draft is important.
And alternative : lots of fresh straw providing deep nest score!

How do the mothers cope with the calves within sight/smell/sound but without access to them? Are freshly calved cows kept in a separate area?

Good question! Better to see them or not?
One hour together, and then they meet again after 2 years...
