WATER: Half of the cows in Europa is drinking dirt and manure...

You can achieve maximum water intake with good quality clean water and easy access to the drinkers. Over 85% of milk is water. The more water your cows drink, the more milk you get. Water light and air are the cheapest feed!

In a survey we found that half of the farms have very poor quality shitty water. Because of not regular cleaning or because of bad systems with communicating drinkers where the low connecting pipeline is full of dirt. On this bad half of the farms they found too many bacteria, high iron, sulphate etc.

The solution is again very simple:

clean your troughs every Monday, Wednesday and Friday after milking as a routine. Also use a brush to clean it properly, because the slimy rims are growing many bacteria. This is how the better farms assure water intake. And again, this cleaning time is paid back in litres milk…

Tipping troughs are a good option...

India is the land of world's oldest domesticated cow tradition. Vedas as the knowledge source on the subject of drinking water for the cows prescribe " Provide freely water for the cows that even we human beings will be grateful to get for drinking". Vedas also say that drinking of dirty water by the cows leads to infertility.

Nice article! For farmers it would be an eye-opener to install a water meter in their water supply. They will notice cows drink a lot more if they improve water quality. And if water they make sure water is sufficiently available. A daily water registration will make you aware of a problem in the water supply in an early stage.

We conducted a trial here at Kingshay with two tipping troughs next to each other each with its own water meter. We tipped one regularly while leaving the other not tipped. The water in the untipped one got more and more murky with meal from the cows' muzzles but intake remained equal to the tipped trough until a cow shit in it. Then intake from that trough stopped altogether. Conclusion: Keep Shit Out of Water - it's not rocket science!
