When the cow should be pregnant already then check rectal the ovaries if there is a mature follikel and tonus on the uterus. If so you can still inseminate the cow. If not than inject prostaglandine after 8 days and check for heat 2-3 days after injection.

Neil Howie

Completely agree with Joep. Often farmers tell me the cow cannot be pregnant because they saw blood after service, but that is not true. Blood is a very good killer of sperm , so there is no point serving a cow when the slime is already bloody, but if a cow has been served before bleeding she can conceive. Of course, if a cow bleeds and has not been served, there is a very good indicator to time the next expected heat , or as Bert suggests , go for a mid cycle prostaglandin . Conception rates for heats which follow a previous heat at a regular (18-24 m, but even better 20-22 day) interval should be good.

Bert Schutte

Some cows are bleeding before they ovulate. The blood does not kill the sperm. This is a whidespread misunderstanding. The blood comes from a ruptured superficial bloodvessel from the mucosa under influence of oestrogeen. The place of origin of the blood can be the uterus, cervix or vagina. It takes a longer time when the blood comes from the uterus. The blood will be darker (older) and it can take 3 to 5 days after heat. If the blood comes from the vagina it will be light red. The follikel can still be on the ovary and you will have good pregnancy results after insemination.

Great to read all the additional thoughts here, together we know more!

Agree more possibilities, mostly bleeding is a sign the cow was in heat!
Follicle still on the ovaria, insemination can be succesfull, but mostly these follicles don't ovulate. The LH peak wasn't that good.
Often corpus luteum these cows have the follicle still inside!
These cows can get in calf when treated with cyst amount of GnrH when served next heat. a third of these cows will ovulate within 24 hours and rest after 24 hours. thats why these cows need to be served two days in a row. To Improve development corpus luteum give half amount GnrH at day 6. Most of these cows are in heat every 23-26 days
Length off Cycle is very important. Ultra Sound check ovaria will give a lot of info! These is additional to previous opinions.

Hi bleeding 24 hours after ovulation is normal! If you see blood you are 24 hrs too late to inseminate!
If you inseminated cow 24 hrs before bleeding: cow can be pregnant!
Be in time : act on oestrus signals : see books cowsignals and fertility signals.

Take care, joep driessen

I'm sorry you have that problem! Joep is on holiday at the moment, but I've passed your question on to him and I'll let you know if he has an answer for you :).

Hi , if you have normal cycle and good heat behaviour and good timing ( AI after 12 hours after standing heat) then cow is healthy.

If heat slime is clear amd sticky , then the uterus is healthy.
Washing Uterus is unneccessary!

You can try another bull/ leave the bull with the cow for 2 months... /better timing AI.

It could also be a contagious disease: early embryonic death ( blood check?) and then you might have longer intervals ( 26 and more days between heats.

Good luck!!

I inseminated sexed semen of my heifer. But she bleeds in clots after 42 hours of insemination. Is it chance of conceiving or return.

Joep

Hi Mehraj, Can be both! Just check her behaviour at 19-23 days after! See heat? Inseminatie again! No signs of heat ? Check for pregnancy 40 days after insemination.

Amit

My cow come in heat with mount but I donot breed that time.

after 20 days cow come in heat and heat countiue 4 days but cow do not mount, cow bred with AI in hospital.
After 3 hours of AI cow discharge bloody cloths for 4 times.
Can this is the sign of pregnancy or not

Arif

Hello Sir,
I have inseminated my cow 9th time. Heat cycle is regular as she comes in heat after every 19 to 21 days. She came in heat on 30th October 7pm & inseminated her on 1st November 8am. Today, on 2nd November there was blood on her tail. In previous inseminations she never bleeded like this. Please tell me what is the cause of bleeding.
Regards
