Cows at play!

In a compost barn cows have maximum freedom to move. Excellent system if you can manage to keep it dry.
Also important is free access to the feeding table. So make at least 5 wide openings for 100 cows, or leave the area between feeding and resting complete open.

im planning to go from bedding pack to compost barn this spring. Mainly to reduce cost in bedding and manure hauling. My 80 cows go currently true 4 round straw bales a day. Besides the fact that the compost barn requires lots of space per cow can anybody give me feedback. Positive and negative. I like to know where I'm getting into. My main concern is how the best way is to work the compost barn. (Tilling versed cultivating) and how do cold winter months work.

Please let me know.
Thanks,riks

Hi Riks,

Perhaps it is interesting to have a look at: http://www.idagro.nl/en/

With straw you need 10m2 per cow and 10 kg per cow a day, it is the cleanest system. This will work with humidity and in the winter.
With compost you need 20 m2 per cow. So you'll need twice as much roof!
