Great interview in Dutch magazine Veeteelt. Frits van der Schans, senior advisor with the Centrum voor Landbouw en Milieu (CLM), talks about the future of dairy farming. Main subject: the pasture. He fears that in a few years, less than 50% of Dutch cows will be in the pasture. "To be honest, it gives me sleepless nights".
We like to keep 80% of all Dutch cows in the pasture. For at least 4 months per year. Grazing or even just walking and resting outside is a big contribution to animal health (hoofs) and welfare. Hoofs can not stand a concrete floor 24/7.
Of course, excellent barns are still necesary for the rest of the time!
